Evergreen Center – Specializing In Senior Counseling Services. Mature adults can become depressed as they deal with physical challenges and illnesses associated with the aging process. Coping with the loss of loved ones and friends also plays a role. Older adults are at the highest risk for complications and life-threatening events related to their depression.

You may not realize your friend or family member is depressed, as depressed people may not talk about how they are feeling. If you suspect a person is depressed, ask about changes in sleep patterns, loss of appetite, difficulty concentrating or a lack of interest in regularly enjoyed activities. In these cases, physical complaints can decrease or resolve following treatment for depression.
